Going away to learn to drive.
Residential driving courses often seem like a good idea. You get away from the distractions at home and have time and space to think, concentrate and relax into the subject. Some course providers will include the cost of a hotel in the price for the course – beware! This is a great way for them to actually make more money out of you. You may find that you’re subsidising a back-hander to the course provider for a sub-standard hotel. Being stuck in a fleapit for a week is hardly going to help you to learn how to drive.
Another concern is that you don’t have the comforts of home around you. People often get depressed and lonely when away on their own, so take care of your emotional health when planning your intensive course – ensure you’ve got a bit of support when you need it. People learn best when they’re happy and optimistic.
Probably the most obvious issue with learning to drive away from home is that…….., you’re away from home! This can help those who are self-concious – you won’t want to hide in the footwell because you spot your friends on the streetcorner you’re approaching. However, a lack of local knowledge means that you will need to deal with exactly what you can see during your test. Your trainer will undoubtedly try to cover the roads they anticipate being used on the driving test, but in a week it would be impossible to cover everywhere. Taking your test in your home town has the benefit that you know where you are and you can anticipate trouble ahead while driving.
Whatever you decide, do as much research as you can, while being realistic about how you learn best. Good luck!
Depending on your experience, you could visit us for just 5 days and we will give you all the skills you need in order to quickly pass your automatic driving test!

A new generation of intensive driving course:
We will help you to gain your driving licence in an automatic car. By removing the confusion caused by gears and a clutch pedal we can immediately overcome many of the technical difficulties that hold people back when they first learn to drive.

Autos are now available as an option on most small and city-friendly cars as well as 4x4s and luxury saloons, so you have a huge choice of vehicles once you have your licence.
Learning to drive in an automatic cuts out the huge amount of time needed to learn the mechanical skills, giving you more opportunity to really understand how to drive confidently and safely. See our Automatic Driving page for more information.

Where do you take the course?
Currently we run the courses from the Heysham (near Lancaster and Morecambe), Kendal and Barrow-in-Furness driving test centres. Residential courses can be arranged, see our Residential page for details of some hotels in the area.
If you have any questions about the course, read through the information on the site, and if the answer isn’t there – feel free to email us:

In order to help you work out which course is right for you, we offer a discounted assessment day (5 hours of driving), which will give you a chance to get to know us and the car you will learn in. This day also gives us a chance to assess how much experience you have, assess what coaching methods will suit your learning style, and give you an honest recommendation for which course we feel would suit you and give you the best chance of passing in the shortest time.
Assessment Day:
(5 hours of driving – £89, and we’ll take £89 off the course we recommend!)
At the end of your assessment day we will suggest a course that is suitable for you. If you are happy with our suggestion then we will put in place our Pass Promise, and we will reduce the price of your course by the £89 you pay for the assessment day!
As you can see from our prices – we have good reasons for recommending the most suitable course for you – if we feel you can pass quick – we will earn more. But if we recommend the wrong course we lose money.
We have no incentive to recommend that you take more training than you need.
